Splinter Cell 4

At Microsoft's X05 event in Amsterdam today, Ubisoft showed off the debut trailer for Splinter Cell 4, the next entry in the company's renowned stealth franchise. Though brief with only a limited look at what the adventure has in store, the trailer was a welcome return to the series that showed some nice special effects interspersed with what looked like actual gameplay.
In the trailer, what appears to be a classic "spies versus mercenaries" multiplayer battle starts off with a spy tip-toeing on a beam high up in a warehouse. His mask comes off -- revealing his face, something that's never been shown for the multiplayer characters in past games -- and then the trailer kicks into gear as a drop of sweat falls down the side of his face and then onto the ground below. It's all shown in insane detail, but up-close shots of the characters make it seem realistic enough to be running on in-game assets.

Once the sweat drop falls to the ground, the camera shifts to what appears to be a mercenary patrolling the ground level. He is wearing a shiny visor, revealing a new look for the character that seems to be futuristic. He walks around for a short while before a spy creeps up from him and attacks from behind.

We are noting many caveats in our sentences, however, because while the trailer confirms that the game will feature both on and offline play, it does not say that the scene it shows is from the traditional spies versus mercenaries multiplayer scenario. It looks like it and sounds like it, but the trailer ends with the tagline, "You have no idea what's coming," so we will have to refrain from speculating too much.

The game will ship in spring 2006 for both consoles and PC. Check back soon to see the trailer in action.
